Influence of Natural Processes and Bottom Trawling in the Nepheloid Layer Structure Off Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada, NE Pacific)

چکیده

Continental margins are transitional areas between the land and deep ocean where large amounts of particulate matter supplied, transported, ultimately deposited in sea. High-energy hydrodynamic processes such as storms, currents, or internal waves tides, well bottom trawling activities contribute to resuspension remobilization these particles. These mechanisms favor their transference from continental shelf slope maintain high concentrations water column forming nepheloid layers. The temporal evolution hydrographic structure upper off Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada, NE Pacific) was assessed by analyzing 4 months (from mid-August late-November 2018) sensor data Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) NEPTUNE cabled seafloor observatory. distribution during study period illustrated a well-defined turbidity consisting surface layers (SNLs) at <100 m depth associated primary secondary productivity, intermediate (INLs) 150 300 shelf-break domain, (BNLs) developed >400 depth. Moderate storm events occurred fall when more intense INLs were recorded depths. However, not all this coincidence with indicating that INL detachments modulated different sediment mechanism. Analyses fishing vessel activity revealed trawlers operated over same range INLs. Our results suggest that, combination regional presence continuous along contributes advection suspended particles, playing major role transfer

Surveillance for Cryptococcus gattii in horses of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

In the last decade Cryptococcus gattii has emerged as an important human and animal pathogen in southwestern British Columbia (BC), Canada. When the disease initially emerged it was identified in humans and multiple animal species on the east coast of Vancouver Island. From fall 2003 until summer 2004, active surveillance was initiated to look for horses exposed to or infected with the organism...

Honeggeriella complexa gen. et sp. nov., a heteromerous lichen from the Lower Cretaceous of Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada).

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Colonists of even the most inhospitable environments, lichens are present in all terrestrial ecosystems. Because of their ecological versatility and ubiquity, they have been considered excellent candidates for early colonizers of terrestrial environments. Despite such predictions, good preservation potential, and the extant diversity of lichenized fungi, the fossil record o...

NEOTECTONIC INVESTIGATIONS ON WESTERN VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA (92F/4) By P.T. Bobrowsky and J.J. Clague, Geological Survey of Canada

Interest in the contemporary geodynamic setting of southwestern British Columbia stems from a concern that a large earthquake may impact the major urban centres of the province. Indeed, monitoring of seismic activity in western Canada indicates that numerous smaller magnitude (<M4) intraplate earthquakes affect the southern coastal region annually. and that very small tremors occur daily. Large...

Optics, Acoustics, and Stress in a Nearshore Bottom Nepheloid Layer

The approach is to obtain measurements that will permit comparisons of temporal evolution of bottom stress, suspended particle size, and optical and acoustical properties in the bottom boundary layer. The instrumentation is mounted on bottom tripods and an I-beam frame. The “OASIS” tripod includes a 9wavelength optical attenuation and absorption meter (WetLabs ac-9, with automated dissolved mea...

Cutaneous diphtheria in the urban poor population of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: a 10-year review.

Between 1998 and 2007, records from 33 patients with cutaneous diphtheria from Vancouver's inner city were reviewed. Cases were associated with injection drug use and poverty. Coinfections with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum occurred. Corynebacterium diphtheriae is endemic in Vancouver's urban core, with strains of multilocus sequence type (MLST)...
